Building a Strong Relationship with Your Engineering Team as a PM

As a Product Manager (PM), one of the most crucial relationships you will cultivate is with your engineering team. This partnership is foundational to building successful products and achieving team goals.

Here are some ideas to foster a strong, productive relationship with your engineering team:

  1. Understand Their World: Immerse yourself in the engineering team’s environment. Learn the basics of coding, familiarize yourself with their tools, and understand their challenges. You don’t need to be an expert coder. Working knowledge will help you communicate and empathize with their pain points.
  2. Communicate Effectively: Effective communication is the cornerstone of any strong relationship. Schedule regular check-ins, and be clear and concise in your communications. Use tools like Slack, Jira, and Confluence to keep everyone on the same page. Always be open to feedback and ready to adapt your communication style to meet the needs of your team.
  3. Set Clear Goals and Expectations: Engineers appreciate knowing the “why” behind their assigned tasks. Articulate the product vision, goals, and how their work contributes to the bigger picture. This aligns everyone’s efforts and fosters a sense of ownership and purpose within the team.
